Social Norms Marketing
Jumpstart motivation
Social norms marketing jumpstarts motivation to engage in civil discourse by correcting widespread misperceptions about peers’ attitudes and openness. We are excited to launch this initiative at Michigan State University, reaching nearly all of its 50,000+ students.

Understand misperceptions
On many campuses, students misperceive one another in ways that discourage engagement. They may view peers across the political spectrum as more extreme or hostile than they actually are, or underestimate how supportive their friends are of cross-ideological conversations. As a result, campus norms can appear marked by weariness or suspicion—even though many students genuinely want to connect and talk across perceived differences.
Build social norms
Our partners at the National Social Norms Center at Michigan State have successfully corrected health-related misperceptions of social norms on campus for decades. Now we jointly tackle the political realm to stimulate dialogue. A spring 2026 survey will identify misperceptions, and a social norms campaign in the 2026-27 academic year will blanket Michigan State’s campus with misperception corrections that resonate with students, increasing motivation to interact.
